Trying to understand EVO FQ versions
« on: November 08, 2009, 08:08:33 pm »
Hi,

Whats the difference between all the FQ versions. Is it just an ecu remap to increase the power or does say the turbo size increase. Mitsubishi seems to charge thousands extra as the power increases.
My question refers to the Evo 8 and 9. Whats the best FQ version to go for?

Thanks
Simon

Tough one. It depends on how deep your pockets are and what you want it for really. Jap Performance did a review sometime ago, comparing the FQ260-360, tho if you wanna go nuts then the FQ 400. Having said that, for the money maybe get an older Evo6,7, or 8 and spend the money you saved on your choice of mods?

Thanks mate,

What I'm trying to work out is if money is best spent buying the lowest output version and paying for a remap which will give the same power as say the 360 version. Or are there mechanical differences?

It will always be worth shopping around, as some slightly older versions will have been modded already. Whereas an unmodded version will be notably cheaper tho not so cheap as to cover the cost of the upgrades, imo.

Save a fortune... buy the 260 version then ring Extreme UK and ask to speak to Simon.

Pipe, filter, fuel pump, ARP rod stud kit and a remap will see 400bhp  8)

Simon was telling me about this the last time I spoke to him, it was 401bhp they acheived.

Then if you want a genuine FQ carbon spoiler....

Ring me  ;D

Thanks guys,

I'd be happy with 400 bhp so the cheapest route would be the base model Evo and a few mods.
I'm quite happy with my gt4 at the moment. I've had it about 4 years now and still enjoy every minute of driving it. I would be sad to see it go. If I did go for something different an Evo would be an option but running costs seem a lot higher.
Another long time favourite of mine is an E39 BMW M5 but running costs are huge on them also. A mate has just bought his second 540i  having had one a year or so ago. Not quite M5 performance but not too far behind and significantly cheaper to run. He doesnt keep his cars that long so that could also be an option. A totally different animal to a rally based car.
