Remote Central locking
« on: June 17, 2009, 03:37:00 pm »
I bought a cheap Mk 1 Ford Focus a few months back to use as a daily driver/sensible family car. Some previous owner obviously lost the remote locking fob, so i've been making do with key access... but now I want to get it sorted. I think I looked into this a while back and I was looking at @ £60 for the fob, and the same again (or more) for it to be recoded by Ford.
Does anyone have any experience of this type of thing? Would I be able to buy one and reprogram it somehow?

IIRC if you dont have the "master key" (often red) then you can't do the reprogramming yourself and usually they cost even more than a normal key. You could check out one of the hundreds of online key programming people that do it for half the price?

Cheers guys. I will investigate further, and may opt to install a generic one if I have no joy with Ford.

Certainly could work out cheaper - a decent CAT1 alarm and immob can be had for ~100, they'll all do central locking, some will do window closure etc too.

I've seen a few motors about the town sporting the "Trix" logo, now I wknow what it is.

The thing is though, I really can't be fecked throwing money at this car, as it's basically a money-saving tool in it's own right. It's mildly irritating that I have to use the key to lock/unlock, but I can live with it. There may be ways and means using ebay etc. to get a lockset and remote/receiver. I know i'm being tight, but hey... I'm a skint dad nowadays!
