What's the appeal of the GT4 to you?
« on: March 07, 2008, 10:30:50 am »
I was thinking this over after many pub arguments with mates, most of whome prefer classics or to stick with a rot-box until they can afford a ferrari. They were trying to work out why i liked my 185 seeing as its not the fastest and looks are subjective. I couldnt really argue with anything other than "I just like it", which is all that matters, but I wondered what everyone elses answers would be with their four?

I don't know what the original appeal was for me, just seen it and had to have it.

At the time I got mine (nearly 8 years ago now) I didn't want a...
1. Scoob because everbody had one
2. Evo was too expensive
3. Cossie's had all been nicked or thrashed at some point of their lives
4. Lancia was too expensive and unreliable
5. Pulsar had the looks of a potato

eh, wht other 4 wheel drive turbo from the early 90's.....? ::)

I love my GT4 mainly because its different. Thats one of the main reasons i got one in the first place that and the fact that the insurance is reasonable for a turbo car when compaired with the £4000 quotes i got for evo's and cossies ;D

I simply loved the looks of the ST165 but also liked the fact (and I believed this until I had owned the car for 2 weeks) it was cheap, reliable power haha :D ;D :D ;D :D

Seriously wanting another GT4 NOW god dam it!!!

I saw my first CS in the flesh about 16 years ago and just thought 'one day...............'

Then I got to drive Cee's 185 about 5 years ago and that was it. The history behind the 4, the looks, the rarity, the performance(on a like for like basis financially) all added up to a way better package than the scooby/evo alternatives. It has since been draining my bank account quicker than Nick Leeson, but the smile factor makes it worthwhile ;)

Cheers

It was the only 4WD turbo car under £3k i would have considered. I hadnt really heard much about the 185s until i started looking, then i only heard about an Owners club... on the net (shock horror) through the lad i bought mine off. I also liked the sound of a performance Toyota, a supposedly reliable manufacturer lol. Just chose to ignore the fact of the car being 15 years old.

The rest is history...and a pretty expensive one.

Wouldnt change it for the world though.

ever since i started working on Toyota's about 9 maybe even 10 years ago i just loved the dam things. the gt4 was just natural progression for me after 2 corollas (1990 gti and 1999 g6r). I've now got 2 celicas..   8) the 185 and the 182. gen 6 gt4 will be the next motor i buy

I would love to have a supra but for the way i drive and the way i like a car to go round corners it's not the car for me just yet.

oh and my mums got a yaris, and when the mrs learns to drive i'm trying to get her in an aygo...haha  ;D Toyota all the way   ;)

I couldnt afford a Supra TT ;) and was reliably informed that Id die going backwards through a hedge if I bought one and that dieing going sideways through a hedge in a 4WD car was the most sensible option  :D

Many good reasons here. Think I mirror Calam's post fairly well actually!

For me..... Well my dream car is a Lancia Integrale, and the GT4 is  a way for me to experience the ball-cracking expense of Lancia ownership with actually having to drive one.
And there was this too......

well my story for owning the 185 is a little different.

Had been on the look out to buy a T bar turbo MR2 for my plaything but after a lengthy 2-3 month search for the right one I either kept getting beat to it (worst was half way to birmingham and getting a call saying it had just sold!!) or they were complete thrashed dogs.

Then my mrs pointed out a Celica GT4 she had seen on ebay said it looked nice!

well this sort of rekindled memories of Mr sainz et al so i went to have a look and a drive.......well I was blown away it looked astounding in the flesh and the drive was superb so there and then I parted with my money and came away a happy chap.

The car gave me 5 great years of ownership and trouble free motoring and I enjoyed every minute of my time with it what other sub £3K turbocharged road going rally car is there available that could do that?

As most of you know last november I sold it and replaced with a Caldina GT-T whils I wouldnt say it is anywhere in the same league in the looks department it certainly shows its celica drivetrain and engine heritage and being an estate ticks all the boxes with regard to moving my family and larger items about :)

my family are a big toyota family and i bought myself my 1st for my 21st birthday (a new 2003 corolla 116bhp D4D) i could never get insurance on a toyota til i hit the 21 bracket but i had to wait til i was 24 before i could get insurance on the JDM 185 ata, it was a great car but i think i was sold short as i always wanted a Sainz then my ata was stolen and damaged, and i eventually got a good one but my inspiration was watching austin mc hale steering the castrol coloured CS, the thing i find weird was when i was a kid i always thought a AE92 corolla GTI was my realistic car and the CS my dream car and i got the CS before the corolla, but i think it'll come soon

my cousin had a black st205 many years ago when i was about 16 and i remember him taking me to the cinema and ever since then i wanted one i remember looking up the GT-Four and finding out there was more to the 4 than i first thought being a fan of rally cars and the whole rally scene i couldn't believe the following these cars have, i remember playing on an old computer game and just so happened to stumble across the st205 wrc model that was it i wanted one and said to myself i'll be having one of them when im older... when the time came to buy a new car i had the whole parent thing "buy something sensible Arran otherwise you'll only regret it" yeah like that was gonna happen i went to many import garages in hope to find a st205 and after looking at a few none of them had the love at first sight feeling i wanted until that day when i was told of a 205 up for sale i went to look at her and WOW it was nice but that wasn't the st205 oh no it was a beautiful st185 just sat there looking stunning i remmember saying is this for sale he replied no sorry mate only the 205 today i said well when is it gonna be up then he said friday i asked how much he told me and i was shocked i thought it would be really expensive but surprisingly alot cheaper, after much research on the st185 and its incredible history in rally i had to have it so before i knew it  friday was here and i had the money in my back pocket i hadn't even test drove it thats how badly i wanted her i remember driving it away and having the biggest grin on my face ever ;D here i am almost two years on with its 2nd engine and i have not one regret! truely the best feeling ever is driving a GT4 ;)

Ah, but as someone posted on there, is that a 165? When it is upside down at the end? ;)
