Job Applications...
« on: November 13, 2007, 02:16:54 pm »
So im applying for jobs and I read the job description of a job (with a large wage) I would have suggested was way above me by its title. I fill 9/10 tick boxes and can demonstrate 6-7/10. Do I
a) Apply and get ripped apart in the interview, maybe put into selection for the other lower job placement on offer.
b) Apply to the lower one and hope to be upped to the next level?

My instincts say a) but I could do without the confidence smash that is being told you dont have things they want lol.

are they both at the same company?

If they are - it depends on the number of applicants. If they are having difficulty filling the position - aim high and negotiate dowm..
If they're not - go for both - you've got nothing to loose
PHEW!!!!

Both at the same place, both on the same project. Not sure whether they will have plenty of applicants or not, its not a common field but they are fairly vague in their specification too.

good man...if you don't get the job it simply means that there was someone a)more suitable for the job or b)better looking or c) in with the 'right' people. Whichever it is, it will not mean that you are 'under par' or indeed anything you should get depressed about. You might even get the job and then there will be some more money to spend on the car ;D

Good luck fella

yeah go for the higher one worst they can say is no you don't meet the criteria and just think its their loss if you don't get it, or tell yourself they had that position filled before the applications went out, works for me haha

Agreed, higher is the way to go, you can always negotiate down a little easily, going up isn't so easy. In a similar position myself as I could use some regular income to support Skewer. Going for one or two jobs similar to my old one at IBM and asking for notably more cash!

Yup, agree there, it's easier to ski downhill. If you were to apply for the 'lower' position I'm sure they would be curious as to why you didn't apply for the higher. Good luck with it ;)

Well I popped them an email asking about the project in general (no info other than the general field, which is rather wide and some areas rather dull) and whether I had to apply to all or would I be re-considered for a higher position or a sideways/downward step if deemed necessary at the selection process. Bearing in mind there were actually 6 almost identical descriptions on two different projects, with differing pay scales, they said I had to apply to each individually as they would not be cross-considered. And the email was somewhat "dont bother me with this" despite it saying "for informal enquiries email..." - so I'm not sure I want to apply there now lol.

Maybe they've been inundated with similar enquiries and are feeling embarrassed about the vague/similar descriptions?

Cheers
