...why I saw about 20 car transporters full of wrecked/accident damaged cars heading north on the M6 around Carlisle?

probably being sent away for stripping and stuff, can't really just crush cars these days fully intact they want all the different metals and plastics together, or there is more money in the obviously in parts, than complete

Could have been salvage cars bought at auction by a salvage yard, like Paul says, parts are worth more than full cars.
