I just recently got home from a trip over to Thailand. While sitting in the plane on the way over, I started thinking about the massive power output and what it might be. I have an application on my iPhone that uses information entered by the user and readings from the accelerometer to calculate your cars acceleration and 1/8th and 1/4 mile times etc.
So, I did some research on the plane and roughly calculated the planes weight at take off, and entered it into this program. And I ran it during take off on the trip home lol. I started the program basically as soon as the pilots ramped up the throttle on the runway. And the program only takes information long enough to work out your quater mile time, after that is stops.
Keeping that in mind, the output power peaked at 18,000 hp, and by the time the program finished the plane was still no way near lift off. The following picture says it all  :D :D



Not overly accurate by any means, I just wish I was able to let the program run for longer lol. But the resulting graph is just hilarious and totally worth it lol

Lol, if you get the details on the weight of the plane you could put it in here:

Actually, just tried it and after adjusting weight and power %age, assuming plane weighs ~400tonnes, I used figures of 2000kg and 90bhp. It refused to work out a figure due to such a poor power/weight ratio, LMAO

lol that calculator needs the power and weight. The program i used actually calculates the power output using info from the iphones accelerometer, and gave me a peak power rating of 18000 hp, and thats way before the plane even left the ground. The plane is a Boeing 767 300ER. My calculations for the planes weight, which factored empty weight, cargo, full fuel tanks and passengers/crew came to 180 tonnes. I can't have been far off because maximum rated take off weight for the plane is 186 tonnes, and the extra 6 tonnes could easily be accounted for if all passengers were overweight and had the maximum allowed luggage.
Also, remember that if the iphone program had been able to run for longer than what it determined to be a 1/4 mile, then the peak power figure would have been far greater still lol.

you dont, the accelerometer is a little device in the iphone that senses movement. during take-off, i ran the program and held the phone firmly to the arm-rest of the chair. The program then took the g-force data measured by the acceleromter, and using the weight figure that I had entered, calculated the power output and distance times from the planes rate of acceleration

I was very tempted by an iPhone when I saw this, then realised it was a backward way of working, I could just buy a gtech and keep my knacered 6630 lol.

Mmmmmm, it's a bit like a typewriter but with more than one letter on each key and sometimes it guesses what word I want and gets it wrong so I have to press another button to change the word. Sometimes it gets it right first time, it's really clever. It will even tell me who's calling so I can ignore you ;)
