MOT PITA
« on: May 06, 2011, 08:43:20 pm »
So I thought I'd replace the front pads before the MOT due to the fact that they're fairly low (still within limits, abt 3mm min) so I popped in and got some el-cheapo pads, a new power steering belt and a new flasher unit. Flasher works fine, belt works fine (even if it's a PITA due to having no air con so using a short belt, meaning I need to remove alt just to remove the alt belt, to remove the PS belt!). Pulled calipers off, check pads - 6mm of pad shape missing meaning all the fitting kit doesn't {fit} at all and would swipe approx 6mm less braking surface - not ideal!

Then as I check the front tyres over I notice a lot of cracking in the shoulders of one of the tyre, still in teh tread and not overly long but obviously due to being left standing for years. Two new tyres then.... this car hurts!

If you're looking for standard tyres, they're rare as rocking horse doo-doos at the moment. I ended up paying £120 each fitted for a pair of 215/50 R16 Kumho's. That hurt!

Not sure if you get bathwick tyres up there, but they do some excellent cheapies at the mo. at £57 / corner (205/50/16). Gripwise holding their own against some yokies at the other end of the car - wet and dry.

I think I'm going to go down the route of T1R's, they're 73 quid plus fitting from camskill each. And while I'm at it I'll get two proxes for the front of the 306 seeing as I'm currently riding around on one with an egg and one with the next profile up... :-\  :o (actually handles no different!).
