Title: MOT passed, back on the road
Post by: Coyoteboy on May 12, 2011, 03:09:30 pm
:) H81 GNF is now alive again. MOT passed with no comments at all, guy grinned and said "all yours, spotless, on you go" :)

Cheers guys! Currently pootling about to use up all the 4 year old fuel in there which seems to have an octane rating of about 55, drives fine but the slightest boost gives me knock and the timing gets cranked back. Also seem to have a strange idle issue. It managed to get through the MOT fine and then developed an 1100 rpm idle when warm, which is very odd, must have a vac leak somewhere but it would have to be metered or it would just fall over... a bit of weekend tinkering to do I think!

I forgot what it's like to enjoy just driving a car rather than just getting to a destination.
I forgot how unforgiving the engine and box mounts are to sudden throttle changes.
I forgot just how much bloody noise the blueflame exhaust makes.
I forgot how 30mph seems very very slow in this car, and how bends that I take at 40ish in the pug don't even seem to be bends at 60 in the Four.

Fun.

i no the feeling, can barely remember what mines like to drive, even owned a 182 for a while to keep my spirits up but she sadly died(possible big end failure) :'(

MOT on the four will be next months payday and after the rebuild im remmembering about a knocking in the back end that it failed on 3 years ago last time i tried lol

it is nice to see more on the the road for sure! there is a scary amount appeared on ebay for breaking over the last few months :-\

Yeah it's a bit shocking to be honest, when I first bought mine in 2004 there was 1 on ebay and 3 in the autotrader. Now ebay is scattered with the skeletons of fours and even 205's are going for pennies.

What was your first attempt failed on? (Ignore that, just put two and two together - brake pipes....)

2+2 = 5

Actually, it was a friends RC that failed on brake pipes. Mine was far more embarrasing.

The car has been stood for 18 months, and I'd completely forgotten I'd borrowed a driveshaft nut when a friend had a driveshaft snap and I had to go rushing out with a spare driveshaft to rescue him. After a drive to & from the MOT station with only the brakes holding the wheel on, the bearing was toast too.

:D ouch! That's an expensive forgetting! Still, at least the rest was fine! I de-megasquirted mine as I wasn't sure it'd pass on emissions, then re-squirted it the day after. Just in case...

Forgot to mention, with the 'squirt back on the car is so much smoother and the power delivery is much more instantaneous off-boost, and on-boost doesn't come in jerky cupfulls, it just piles in all at once. Mmmmm. Just need to sort the high idle and rediculously low biting point now!
