Title: Engine weight
Post by: Coyoteboy on July 23, 2010, 02:42:13 am
So I've been trying to sus out the exact weight of a 3S-GTE and numerous sources quote remarkably similar values, ranging from 125 to 135kg, though some quote with and some quote without tubby and manifolds etc which I would expect would make a hell of a difference. Having tried to pick one up I'd say it's about right by feel, but that's hardly accurate. But what confuses me more is the fact that the VW 1.4TSI engine is hailed as a miracle engine due to its power/weight ratio and VWs own figures rate it at 126kg. WTF? Either the 3S is WAY heavier than several people have measured (?) or something fishy is going on. I know the MR2 transmission is ~80Kg, which makes a hell of a difference when they are compared as a package, but I was always under the impression the 3S was a heavy iron lump shunned from lightweight cars, could this be primarily down to the box being almost as heavy as the engine in fact?

(still trying to decide on kit layouts).

Im pretty sure the lump, bare, would weigh in around the 125kg mark, i lifted mine when i stripped it, there was block, head and some minor bits, and believe me, it was fecking heavy!

Ex manifold is 6kg
Head without rocker cover is 27kg

It's a start, lol

I have a block, crank, and four pistons with rods in the garage. I'll get the scales out and measure them if I remember, and then we might come to some conclusions :)
