Title: Best handling upgrades
Post by: Frikkin Evil on January 14, 2010, 02:05:31 pm
Now the wife's back working again, I am plotting the next round of upgrades to the four. I want to get a fair bit of track action, so for now i'll be focussing on handling rather than power (I estimate i'm around the 300 bhp mark now).

So, I am interested in suggestions as to where to start, particularly from those who've upgraded their cars before.
My Faff is pretty stock in terms of chassis mods, other than 18" rims.

£ for £, what are the best changes to make, and what order to do them?

Rear anti roller bar and bushes..  make a very good pound for pound upgrade.  ;)

I agree with silverspeed. That's the only things I've done to mine so far and they made a noticeable difference for around 150 quid.

Me personally would remove the 18's too..  :-X  Replace them with some 225/40/17's then some eibach springs. sorted.

Whiteline Rear ARB.
Bucket seats and harness (amazing what a difference being held in place makes to the feel of the car).

Good call. That was one of the ideas floating around in my head.

I know that opinion is divided on the issue of wheel size for best handling. I think i'll stick with the rims for now, but i'll keep an eye out for a nice set of light 17's in the future. Springs are higher priority.

Bucket seats and harness (amazing what a difference being held in place makes to the feel of the car).
Seats/harness - On the list now, but I might get a CG-Lock in the short term.

Thanks for your input so far.

I'm thinking, in order of purchase...

Rear ARB and poly bushes,
New tyres, or cheap 17's with decent tyres,
CG- Lock,
Springs/dampers,
...?

so far on my 185 I have replaced the stock shocks with brand new kyb's, fitted Dobi Sport lowering springs, and have a set of 16" Sparco Racing mags fitted, and got poly bushes for the front and rear ARB's and its made a world of difference. Next on the list for my car is a big brake upgrade (using 4-pot Hilux calipers) and a Whiteline rear ARB.

Ah yes, stopping power. On the faff I might go for red or yellow stuff pads with the stock discs for now, but what's a good setup to use once i'm replacing the discs? Are braided brake lines worth a go too?

Definitely braided lines! I found the Red Stuff pads weren't too keen on track days, still faded quite quickly(6 laps).
I got a good deal on a set of HiSpec 4 opt calipers with 310mm discs, tho this is on my 185. I've heard talk of Audi TT discs being a good option for the 205, tho I don't know any specs.

Here's the HiSpec CLICKY (http://www.bigbrakes4u.co.uk/over-sized-conversions-conversions-c-106_110.html)
