I finally got round to getting a new MOT on my faff yesterday and it passed with only an advisory on the back brakes which I knew were needing replaced.
So as soon is I got back I started ripping out the cat which was a pain in the arse on its own! I managed to depressure the air con system at the same time :-[ lol while the decat pipes been off I used some heat wrap from my work to lag it and a few jubilee clips to hold it on. I took the car for a test drive and while sitting at traffic lights in the middle of traffic loads of smoke started to pour out of all the vents in the bonnet :o :o :o thats when my heart stopped and I thought oh crap the heat wraps on fire!
I opened the bonnet and it just seemed to be either excess gasket compound or maybe a coating from the wrap and one of the jubilee clips has melted the coating of it lol but thankfully no fire.

Heat wrap will smoke for a while, I've had the same worry a long time ago when i heat wrapped a DP and front section of the exhaust on a previous car, it will go away after you get a few good miles on the clock.

It seemed to have died down by the I got home it was the initail shock of the smoke. I think i'll be wripping the air con out seen as I removed one of the pipes and depressurised it the quick way, which i would not recommend.
-
ya get a wee scare with it blowing back and the whoosh of it depressurising lol
-
You could say that paul I nearly wet myself. I dont know why I wasn't expecting it to do that if I'd thought about it I wouldn't have done it but I was just getting to the point where the pipe was in the road so it was coming off not matter what lol
-
ah well its better all pulled out, not as if we need air con over here
-
can be risky depressurizing the air con like that, if that stuff gets in your eyes it can make you permanently blind
-
I bet your heart was in your mouth!
Nice 1 on the MOT... it always amazes me with these old cars.

???Thankfully I didnt know that at the time lol
Cheers FrikkinEvil I know what you mean the guy who's done my MOT's always comments on how clean it is underneath for a older car.

:) yup - heat wrap smokes like mad - I had similar scary moments when I wapped mine (only I wrapped mine from the manifold back to the backbox - it was like the red arrows had flown under the car!).
