Title: Northern Ireland MOT's
Post by: rhino on September 17, 2008, 08:03:45 pm
Evening fellas ;D

I'm after another 205, and have come across this beauty
(http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b248/rhinoimages/file002.jpg)
Now, it's from Northern Ireland, and a fair way from the Isle of Wight, so I would like to be 90% sure before I fly 350 miles and drive the car back.

The seller (decent bloke it seems) says there are no receipts for fig 8's/lower arms, clutch, or cambelt...and he assumes none of these have been done recently, but he does say that MOT standards in NI are way higher than in England, and that as the car has just passed its NI MOT the car will be sound?

I'm not too sure tbh as my old 205 slapped me proper hard for fig 8's/lower arms, clutch and cambelt, and with it being a buyers market at the moment I don't want to get stung again.

So my question (gets there in the end lol) is...Will the NI MOT pick up on fig 8/lower arm, clutch or cambelt wear, and enforce renewal if they are getting tired?

TIA

Karl

I can tell you that english cars won't pass a NI mot (usually need suspension work )

Well thats the broadest, most wide sweeping, mis informed statement Ive heard in years.
Like to elaborate on that one?
Not having a go, just sounds like a complete load of cobblers to me, btw Ive been an MOT tester for 14 years and an MOT Quality Controller for 9 so know a thing or 2 about the UK MOT scheme at least.

that car has been for sale here in N Ireland and i've seen it around on the internet for sale, could you PM me the location of the car so i can assure its the same car as the background i think is the same as a few pics i've seen elsewhere, i was interested in looking at it before i got the orange faff as it does look like a nice example, coming from another northern ireland lad yes MOTs are alot harder, things are more stringent and you don't away with anything, its pass or fail end of, whereas over there you get notices for minor things which can be rectified at a later date and a pass certificate given with these minor issues, when i had my sainz and chris and cee were both there to verify this, the headlight alignment were out as i had recently fitted HIDs and Raybrig lenses to the car, also the horn button from the MOMO wheel was missing, it was in the ashtray so it was both failures in the MOT mans eyes in Northern Ireland so i would had to take my car back and sorted it and paid another £17.50 for a retest and then get the car retested all over again. Over with chris and cee the guy set the lights and i replaced the horn button and everything was presto another ticket for a year without the cost of a retest, over the years the Eng/Scots/Welsh testing facilities have tightened up ship and its not as easy to do the old back street back hander which alot of N Ireland guys used to use as well to get MOTs for cars that were never tested they just got a pass cert in the post and thats were we guys over here don't trust the MOT system as much as our own. Our test centres are government test centres not local garages with credentials to such work, the guys there are paid by the hour and not by how many cars they test so in theory they aren't in any rush to test them (hence the 8-10week waiting list over here for MOTs). Hope this cleared up some argument over the NI MOT system

Aaahhh...but there have been developments :P

The seller (who has only had the car about 12 months) sent me an email last night in response to my telling him that I would pass on the car due to lack of fig 8/lower arms, cambelt and clutch work. He says that he has had a look through the folder of receipts from the previous owner, and that he has found a stack of receipts from Fensport etc for huge amounts of works...including he thinks the lower arms 8)

Now the best bit (and an indication that he is probably a good honest fella) is that he is going to post me the service history of the car over the weekend (trusting me to send it back) so that I can have a look for myself. Suffice to say, if the receipts add up...BANG I'm very interested again lol

What I was hoping was that if the receipts add up, I would stick a post on here asking if any NI members could have a look at the car for me (as long as the seller is OK with it) and get me a few extra photos. I'll get hold of the guys postcode and if he agrees and there is a willing members pass on the details. Beer tokens will be provided for any services rendered ;D

Of course, there is always the chance that the seller is the dodgiest fella ever, and the car a lemon. I do believe in hoping for the best though before expecting the worst

And I'll go along with Paul to make sure he misses nothing, and asks the appropriate 'important' questions. ;)

just waiting for the service history to arrive in the post. The seller says that he posted it over the weekend, so hopefully get it soon ;D If it all looks good, I'll be in touch with everyone pretty quickly.

This Saturday I am going to look at a jdm 205 that has been advertised on the OC for a while now...olly205's car if anyone has seen it advertised. It looks pretty good, and has apparently had cambelt and fig 8's etc done. Price is good too ;)

I'll be in touch with everyone regardless of which way I go.

Cheers

Karl

Just to let you guys know, I have bought a different 205; olly205's one. I am very chuffed, particularly as I managed to get it for a nice low price ;D The car seems to be in great condition; a credit to the previous owner.

Thank you all who offered to help; I would have updated this a few days ago (bought the car on Saturday) but have been unable to get onto the ec for a few days now.

Cheers
