Well took the faff to Momentum Motorsport earlier this week and told them to have a good look over it let me know if its good for 600+bhp and rectify the small problems that were on the car......... they had a good look around it whilst i was there and compression tested it and cylinder 3 was well down......... now i started worrying and Andrew said it could be just a gasket away and it would be relatively straight forward, they were busy with 2 mr2 turbos and a few evo's whilst i was there and said it would be later in the week they would get the head off and find the problem, so i headed off to get the bus for the 80mile journey back home........ then i got the phone call today whilst i was in a meeting from Steven Revells, more or less telling me to sit down......... the car has bent valves, the head is coked to the nines, and now for the good news i have 2mm piston slap on cylinder 3 and nearly as bad on number 2......... and the head gasket is slightly fractured........ the car has 2 chunks missing on number 2 piston head, the car since i got it was driven quick once and that was on the M62 heading to Liverpool and whilst over here it never seen the speed limit as i was skint from all the saving trying to get it......... and i was driving the puma all the time, last thing i was needing is this.......... so now i have no car and a massive bill coming for the rebuild and Momentum won't touch it any further til i come up there and look at it myself......... and now to top it all off me and the missus finished tonight over the fact i scrimped and saved like crazy for nearly 3months to get this car and she said she's not putting up with it for another few months......... i feel like absolute crap and worked my ass off for the last few months for nothing
-
Bloody hell Paul...I'm sure the missus just saw red mist and flipped. Hopefully she'll be back soon enough, even to a fat lad like you.
As for the car? Well at least 'when' you get it sorted you know for yourself it will be spot on.
Hope all goes well Paul, just vent away if you need to.
-
yeah well it'll be no summer driving now and i'll have to get myself a runaround for a few hundred quid, only consellation is i have my holiday paid off so roll on those 2 weeks.......... its that bad i could hit the drink
-
Feel for you mate :( a real shame this has happened so early in your ownership, but look on the bright side, once rebuilt you'll have a fresh engine in there that you'll know the full history of with no more surprises lurking around the corner.
-
yeah well thats the only thing i'm going to be happy about......... its just something i didn't need atm
-
Fook it, if it's any help I've a 205 top end to pick up later in the week, if for any reason your head is unrepairable you can have it for the same price I picked it up.... free :)
-
thanks lad, that would be much appreciated
-
think i've got sarah calmed down, but i think it have to live by her rules for the next couple of months rather than scrimping and saving and being a selfish so ans so, like i did the last couple........ ah well
-
Bad news on the car mate, hope it all works out at a reasonable cost at least then youll have peace of mind.
-

I told you she'd be back ;)
Live by her rules for 50% and you'll still be able to save a bit. Get some overtime in, treat her to a meal every now and then and all will be sorted soon.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you matey 8)
-
Thats bad news mate. Similar thing happened when i first picked up my four. couple of months down the line the bottom end went so was forced to spending my spare cash on jus getting it road worthy.
These things find a way of sorting themselves out so just hang on in there.
Buy the missus some gaffer tape, im sure itll keep her happy (or is that quiet!)
-
aargh thats awful mate. i feel for you. at least things are on the up again.. good luck with it all.
-
Gutted, its easy to pick up a lemon without realising. 2mm of piston slap on 2 cyls - feck me! Who had this car before you and what did they do to it?
-
AAh Paul that is *(*&ing Erse mate. Gutted for you! :'( :'(
Can you get any recompence from the seller?? :-\
If you need spares get a post up soonest and we can all start looking out for you. ;)
-
its easy to pick up a lemon without realising.
Pauls is definately an Orange not a lemon Mate!!!! ;D ;D ;D :D :D
Sorry Paul, couldn't resist :-[ :-[ ;)
-
Gutted for you Paul!
So you'll be looking the Pug 306 back then.......
And there was me hoping to get round to have a look at it this week!
-
That's bad news mate. Tho look at it this way, you would have needed a load of work on it for the 600+ you're hoping for anyway?
The good lady will chauffeur you round over the summer ;)
Cheers
-
have you been in touch with wiggy?
I have a spare engine that i was keeping for a forged rebuild - if you want to do something with it - borrow it or what ever you can do.
-
Sorry to hear the bad news Paul :'(
Chin up though eh, worse things happen at sea :o
-
Really feel your Paul I do, but glad you and the missus sorted it out, and she'll give you loads of support I'm sure in your times of need, flowers, chocolates, bottle of wine and a nice meal always work ;) ;)
I hope you get the car sorted soon though and have you spoken to the old owner?
-
well the old owner is on here and is good friends with a few on the site, not sure if wiggy knew there was problems with the car or not so can't comment there........ car has new wiseco pistons sitting and ready to be lodged in, going for oversize valves and porting the head even further with the manifold getting some work too......... things haven't really changed with sarah, i'm not really in the good books and had to walk to work tonight and i think its going to be a while before i get the puma as my runaround again, and the 306 tbh i'm glad i seen the back of that car, but will be looking for a cheap and cheerful run around in the near future though
-
Wow, that sucks, Paul! :( All the best with getting it up and running again mate! ;)
-
couldn't get up to Momentum on Fri as sarah was using the puma til late, and i needed to be there before 3, so spud took some pics of the car with the head off showing the damage,

from the last pic you can see the 2 small pieces missing from the piston head, others show the coking of the valves and mild port and polish work, so the future for the car will have 1mm oversize wiseco pistons, oversize valves, major port and polish on the head and exhuast manifold, with a 1.6mm HKS head gasket, turbo balanced with thrust bearings and seals checked, thats just to get it back on the road, with a map done by Andrew Mercer on the DTA managment
-
Mmm,only just got round to reading this post.Sorry to hear your having problems Paul :(
Hopefully your Mrs will come round eventually. She must know you are car mad ;)
-
yeah we're getting on ok, basically i've given her control over the cash flow as i've been a bit of a selfish git the last while trying to get the cash together for the car and paying for a holiday for us, but she basically funded everything else so hopefully over the coming weeks it'll all come together and i'll have the car back
-
any ideas on the cause of this Paul?
-
any ideas on the cause of this Paul?
Thats an easy one.....................Its been Paulified ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Glad things are slowly sorting themselves mate and I'm sure you and Sarah will be fine, you sound like your turning things round by giving her control of the cash flow etc.
Least with all the new parts you'll know your engine is spick and span and can have fun driving her round once she's all done, you know she'll be worth it in the end, and once she is done Sarah will know it to :)

And if not , You can stay in the East Wing of my house. ;)
-
Gutted for you mate, atleast when you get is back it'll be how you want it.
good luck with it.
-
Sorry to hear of your bad news Paul. gutted to see that happening to that car.
I don't know if you are aware but this time last year my friend Paul Bartolo who built the car had just fitted new 1000cc injectors and fuel rail setup and only got round to start mapping the car for the changes before he passed away. I don't know if the car was ever mapped properly after that? That is the last piece of history I know of the car and I thought you should know.
If the car did get the map finished properly then its just been missfortune and run of the mill bad luck but if the car hasn't had the maps touched and been driven quite a bit in the last year then thats whats caused this to happen for sure.
Hope you get everything sorted ok and keep the range beast alive and well!
Scott
-
well not 100% sure of how it was caused as i never touched the boost controller since recieving the car, could have been a mapping issue but i haven't been up in Momentum since the car was left there early last week, but will be up there this week to see hows are going and to get a rough guesstimate of how everything is going to go and costs, thanks for the concerns anyways folks, as stated i know when the car comes back it'll be built and mapped to a higher standard than before so hopefully my worries will be at an end then........... thanks Scott for that info, i'll be basically doing a picture write up of the work in progress as this car is one of the special ones in the four community
-
Jeez, you come in on a Monday morning to this....F u c k m8, I honestly had no clue the car was broke and from driving it I had no signs at all of anything wrong. Obviously, you knew about the mapping issuse and the 1000cc injectors going in. I made this very clear. I very rarely used the car as I posted up on the orignial for sale post. Thats why I wanted it to go to someone who would A) use it and B) look after it. Please don't think for one second I sold this knowing about the issues. I drove the car 360 miles to meet you in Manchester as you know and it never missed a beat. The car never got thrashed and when I took you out for a spin in it, this was the fasted it had been in some time. As you know from this test drive it was fine and you wouldn't have known it had anything wrong. It never used oil, never smoked, had no blow by at the breather etc...
I'm ever so sorry this has happened m8, there is nothing worse than selling a car and then 2 weeks later it breaks. I know as you say though, it will be bigger and better once its sorted m8. I don't beleive in ghosts, but you have to wonder with the issues you've had :o
I've PM'd you as well m8...
-
was up with the faff earlier today and when i got the bill for the fix, i nearly blew a 300amp fuse, not sure how much its going to cost to leave it back to the standard i collected the car in, but i've added a few things to the list so i don't have to it in future which is bumping the price up, basically the head is getting a full overhaul other than the HKS cams and AEM pulleys everything else is going to be worked or replaced........ i'm going to be getting a break down emailed to me over the next few days to show where all my hard earned cash will be going......... and i'll post it up here to show the future prospected changes and where my 4600quid will be going
-
Blimey mate...thats alot of cash considering you have spent ages saving up and only just forked out X quid for buying the car in the first place...dont go busting yourself over this...remember it is only just a car
-
Oh dear.
being Friday ...
Oh *BLEEP*e.
Owww gawd Paul... oh whata problem / Nakeers sold as....
look... i'm just a bystander. but I have feelings XX
Sympathy..... symphonie ...play nice music...it chills ou out????
ket a kia? 44mpg?
-
well using the puma again lol, but i have started paying it off and the car could be back on the road in 4 weeks funds permitting, so i'll keep you informed, going to get the guys to do pics of the full build for the forum if possible
-
well was up with the faff today again as i was only around the corner in belfast as sarah was up in queens university for some meeting, everything is stripped out and every part will be there tomorrow so let the work commence, got another bit of bad news as well but kinda don't really mind it, car needs a clutch kit as the plates are down to near the rivets so may as well do it now when everything is out rather than doing it all again in the coming months
-
ACT2600, a mans clutch.
-
nah i just need the plates and release bearing and whatever comes in the kit for the HKS twin plate
-
Thats a fair wack of cash! hopefully things go a lot better for you this time. will be good to see the final result, give all of us inspiration.
Good luck Paul ;D
-
yeah well clutch kit is coting about £340 i think from Sumopower or HKS Europe themselves, hopefully that'll be the last thing i need to get.........
-
Jings a clutch too! It didn't really have a hard life thought a 1k clutch would have lasted longer than that :o
Good to see that it's all coming together. Are you getting the guy from dta to map it once it's been run in? I've got loads of pics of the car 1st time around when it was built up.
-
andrew has mapped loads of DTA's in the past and was saying about needing a pop box as he didn't have one anymore, i opened the boot and said is this what your on about, he was impressed by the one paul made for the car......... so he'll be doing the mapping of the car, when they stripped the box they noticed the plates being very thin so they split the clutch and there was very little milage left on it, you could just see the dimples where the rivets would have been coming through so it was best to replace it whilst all the work was being done, and strapper could you send me over the pics as i'm looking to redo a portfolio for the car
-
got another call this morning from spud, saying i need a new block as the original block couldn't be used with the oversize pistons as there is a few thou between the cylinder wall and piston number 3 and the block was previously linered with the half mil oversize pistons and wouldn't be advisable doing it again.......... this is getting rediculous
-
This car is going to have cost you some serious cash by the time its all put right! Any idea what your final bill is likely to be with the clutch kit and now this to add on as well? Bet the sainz is looking good about now....
When you finally do get it back on the road you'll be driving like your granny in case you break anything else!!
-

Talk about kicking a man when hes down....:(
-
Jesus mate I have everything crossed for you that nothing else goes wrong :o

You want the block off your old ATA? I know its a tad different but with where you want to get to would it really matter?
-
nah i'd rather have a faff block, i've been offered one 165 blocks and a couple of 185's but i'd rather have the faff block as its the right one for it......... and saves more dilly dallying changing things too suit, might have a bit of luck with a block i've enquired into
-
Its believed the 185 lock is better that an 205..quote me if i'm wrong.. but i'm sure most big powered celica's run the 185 blocks and 205 head..?
If you want my advice..?
Stick with a reliable power and not 600bhp.. give smithy (tr&d) a call and get some advice about running this power and ask about reliabilty/cost. If your not carefull it will bite you on the bum and decisions will have to be made.. ie beyond ecomical cost..(is it worth doing) All ready by the sounds of things your pushing the boundries of funds and relationship..is it worth the hassel just yet?
I'm not pointing fingers or anything but surely that kind of damaged doesn't happen over night? Did you get it inspected.. by either the rac or the aa.?
-
nope never got it inspected as i was going by what the previous owner and people on this forum had to say about the car......... i'll look into the block issue with ian and see what he has to say on monday
-
probably the best few quid you'll ever spend. ;)
-
With the best will in the world, the AA and RAC checks would struggle to identify the problems here. When you consider that the vast majority of times when they attend a 4 breakdown, they take one look under the bonnet and it's straight on to the low loader.
Just my 2p
-
:-X
-
oh er ark at you... >:(
Not pointing fingers.. so just step off the high horse plz.
Was thinking if they did inspect it some blame could be thrown their way...££££. A Familiy memeber brought a volvo v70 and had it inspected with the aa..at a cost of £99. Two days later number to pot cracked.!! :-[ After doing 7 miles to work. Now according to the aa they did a compression test and all was ok.. ::) Later they admitted they didn't do one and paid for the engine to be rebuilt.
-

-
Engines ready to go now chap - i just need to get it crated.. :-)
-
super robbie, just need andrew to get back to be about the pics but i think its looking the best option
-
Jesus Paul thats alot of money, still you'll have a top faff at the end of it all and will have lots of fun with her I'm sure ;)
-
yeah dee thats the plan at least i'll have the insurance knowing whats been done and know its all new parts
-
See, thats the way to do it, look on the bright side of things, its only money at the end of the day, you cant take it with you so may as well have fun with it while your here and what better way than to have an amazing Faff 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
I'm sure Paul would have wanted this beastie to survive... im glad to help out mate!
-
thanks robbie thats one of the main things i want to do, because we all know it would be easier to break the car but that'll never happen whilst i own it, and dee any four makes me smile but this one gave me the biggest of grins
-
and dee any four makes me smile but this one gave me the biggest of grins
Yeh I have found the same problem Paul, sat in the Faff for the first time behind the wheel and squealed all the way down the road ;D ;D ;D ;D The 185 has a simular affect where as I just have this stupid grin on my face, OMG I think I'm addicted to 4's
