Title: Advice re trip to amsterdam
Post by: Nosher on March 28, 2008, 08:38:42 pm
As above please.
Me and mrs nosh are off for  a weekend in April and have never been there before. Any advice re places to go etc would be nice.
Sights to see, restatraunts etc :)

Im well aware of the brothels in amsterdam but these are deffo not our scene.
Advice re places to avoid would be nice as well so we dont end up walking into any red light areas please.
I know about canabis over there as well so cakes are off the menu too ;)

Dammit.. you answered all the stuff I was going to put :) I have a Rough Guide you can borrow if you like though it may be a little out of date... I tend to google lots before I go away.. can find out most things that way :)

that's where mysh and i went for our honeymoon  :-*

The dam is a weird place.  one second you are in the posh bit with boutiques everywhere, you turn the next corner and there is a scary man offering to sell you anything you like.  There is no point in trying to avoid the red light district - some of the best bars are round there.  and you can't avoid the coffee shops - they are everywhere, including he main streets.

best bet is get a map, because it can get quite confusing.  During the day you can go anywhere, but avoid the red light area after 10 unless you want to see the drunk brits and the blokes selling hard drugs. (And you are allowed in the coffee shops and bars that sell weed even if you aren't partaking  :D  )

and don't forget

what happens in the 'dam, stays in the 'dam   8)   :D   :-X

have a good time

only real advice is that booze in bars aint cheap - youre lookin at £3+ a pint (not gonna kill ya but its not a bargain either)

However find yourself an ALbert Heijn (Tesco to you and me!) and ut a crate of grolsch for about a fiver, get plastered, THEN go out!

You can read up loads on the Dam ont he web, but if youre there a few dyas and want to get out and about get on a train to Zandvoort which is their version of Scarborough.  Could spend a few hours ont he beach there and in the bars and old town for summat different.

Also try "Friet Speciaal mit Frikandel Speciaal".  Thats spicy sausage and chips with mayonnaise, curry sauce and diced raw onion.  SOunds awful, tastes the business!  You will put about 4 stone on though!

"Aus-u-blieft"

'Friet' is kinda Belgian, we more often use 'patat'. 'Mit' should be 'met' and is pronounced 'mat', but yeah frikandel speciaal sure is very nice!  :) Gotta try 'bitterballen' too then, quite Dutch, you'll love 'em!  8)

If you're going to Zandvoort, there's a circuit too  ;) http://www.cpz.nl/events/2008/ (http://www.cpz.nl/events/2008/)

Glad you had a good time Nosh ;)

We need to go again as well, seeing as the last visit was a bit of an accidental detour, lol

Cheers
