Title: Thieving scrapmen take road gully tops
Post by: Jeff on September 19, 2007, 06:08:20 pm
Had a spate of thefts of cast iron road gully tops (you should know what these are!)
I.E the grate over the surface water 'collection' drains on the side or middle of the road.
Stupid ignorant morons have taken dozens from the east end of Ashington.
Little kids are falling into the holes, elderly are likley to break their legs if they step into them.
I cannot believe the ignorance of the theives.
Price of cast iron must be up! Doing it at 9:00 am... everyone saw them.. thought it was council cleaning the gullies... untill the orons left ... holes in the road!
Costs 70-80 notes to replace them and I have had the police in to try to find which scrappy is taking them in for ??? a fiver ??? each.
White transit and a white/black pick up seen in the area when they went missing.
Anyone local.... please watch and advise me if you have information.
Thanks
Jeff

Our internet was off for 4 days after someone pulled up, chopped through the 1000 pair cable at two places and left it ready to come back and pinch it later. 100m of copper cable and left the whole estate including doctors surgery, pharmacy and a whole stack of elderly people without a phone. Idiots.

It always makes me laugh when they arrive in town - they moan about the image they have and not being accepted by the locals, then they leave having stolen just about everything that wasnt tied down and a knackered wasteland where they were living. I'm sure some of them might be nice and good people, but im fairly sure most are theiving pikey scum.

Safety fears after drain cover thefts

Scavenging thieves are putting lives at risk by ripping out roadside drain covers in Ashington.
Almost 30 gully covers have been targeted by thieves as a way of making a few pounds from the scrap .
The gaping holes left at the kerbside could be potentially lethal to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, police and highway bosses have warned.
Jeff Sanderson, Highways Services Manager said at least 28 gully covers had been stolen in the last two days.
"The covers weigh up to 4kgs each and vary in size but it can cost anything between £50 and £100 to replace each one. If you add in the cost of making the area safe. When you add up the numbers, it works out between £3,000 and £4,000 of council taxpayers' money spent so far which could certainly have been put to better use.
"But the risk to life and limb is even more frightening. The consequences could be horrendous if a pedestrian should step into the gaping hole or a bicycle or motor vehicle drops a wheel in it."
He added: "It is totally crazy to put people in such danger for a few pounds.
"We now use heavy duty plastic covers which have no scrap value at all so it is pointless stealing them."
The thefts have been reported to the police by the Council .
•   Anyone who sees suspicious activity in relation to gully covers is asked to contact the District Council on (01670) 532200 or the police on 08456043043 ext 69191

thieving pikeys knicked the earthing cable from the local substation near me. think it was a quite a bit aswell. no one realised until the substation tried to earth itself that it was missing. cuase the substation couldnt earth, about 20ft of cable underground vapourised, was one hell of a bang.

also some local pikeys aswell have being going into b n q where the copper was on offer, bought *BLEEP* loads, and took it to the scrappys and made some money on it.
