looking into a possible donor shell to replace mine.

in 2 minds really, either get my bodywork sorted as it's getting a bit tatty or get a narrow body tin top four, sort the body work and then re-shell mine.

give him £250 to change it and walk off laughing   ;D

£250 for a clutch change on a four is stupidy cheap so your be onto a winner if he does it properly.

he won't do one again for £250 thats for sure.  ;D :D ;D

Do you think this is deffinetly the clutch?

Car On will not even try to enter any gear with the clutch pressed in or not. apart from reverse when you try that it just crunches.

Car off can get any gear clutch in or owt. and if you put it into first and turn car on with clutch pressed in it jumps forward.

just wanted a second opinion

cheers

thats what mine was doing when clutch went. u can limp it down to the garage by starting it in 2nd/3rd and jump starting. If u match the revs perfectly you should be able to change gear without the clutch (but i never managed it).

Mine cost £600 to replace, thats inc clutch/vat. Also i had to have a new box for the clutch pedal as it had cracked (tis a common problem on 185s apparently). so i suppose my labour was closer to £400 for everything.

Remember to add VAT to that quote, its always misleading i think, but then i suppose peeps who work in the trade are used to it.

hth

Matt

Box for clutch pedal? wats that

cheers

under the steering column (in the car), where the pedal attaches to the bulk head, it attached via a box type thing, which tends to crack with time. small crack is not too much of a problem, but obviously will worsen and need doing eventually. I suppose it adds extra movement to the pedal without actually engaging the clutch. Your defo sounds clutch related though, as u have different scenarios with the engine on and off.

if you had the clutch done and the pedal bracket done at the same time my money would be on the clutch being ok but the bracket cracked causing the problem.

it is a very well known fault on the 185 and makes gear selection almost impossible.

thats a broken one

what happens is when you press the pedal the crack opens and the pedal does not act on the master cylinder so you get no clutch action at the slave cylinder so it resembles trying to change gear with no clutch

Post by: markd1984 on May 05, 2008, 06:40:58 pm
just had a look att the pedal and all seems well with that, looked at the slave cylinder and its going in and out when the clutch is being pressed.

the only othe thing it is doing is making a nasty squeeking sound when you press the pedal. how is the clutch lubricated? its like it has gone dry

cheers
Title: Re: st185 import £750 needs clutch
Post by: peterp1per on May 05, 2008, 10:04:17 pm
the clutch itself doesn't not lubricating bud.

the squeak is probably from the clutch fork/pivot ball where the grease has dryed up over time. you need to remove the gearbox to properly lube it back up anyhow.

it is possible to have one done in a day, but if he's never done a four before he could be in for a surprise..lol

it took me on my last st185 2 days to do. he recons he will be able to replace it without takeing the engine out. my thoughts on this is that it is not possible? i took the engine out in my last one.

or is it possible lol?

update for you guys

just had the mechanic on the phone and i will not be getting the car back till friday morning he has got the gearbox out and has confirmed that the clutch is shatterd and said their was some nasty marks on it as if the car had been flogged. (not by me).

so the good news is the problem has been identified, bit concerned about what else has been put under strain in the past

also some previous owner welded the plates on the clutch prdal so it cnt be adjusted
Title: Re: st185 import £750 needs clutch
Post by: peterp1per on May 11, 2008, 10:37:22 pm
plates on clutch pedal? what do you mean?

Title: Re: st185 import £750 needs clutch
Post by: markd1984 on May 12, 2008, 10:47:44 am
apparently it has split before or summit and it has been welded so all the adjustment has been takeing out. the bite was very low down when i drove it for the short period of time befor the drive shaft give up.

think this car is gunna get sold for definite, i need reliability for work
