it came off my 20faff wrc. its a big turbo! i had a 42mm restrictor in it as it was surging. i was running a maxium of 340bhp, @ about 18psi.
as for mods, its personal preferance or wallet preferance! ;D gud zaust, pannel filter, k1ano relief valve.
and of course, new pistons!!!!!!! because the ringlands are made of belgium chocolate! :'(

Piston ringlands on the 205 are a bit weaker than the 185 ones (IIRC they use a hypereutectic piston alloy) but are only a problem if you abuse them by not tuning correctly.

mine blew at 1bar on me cs and iirc martin blew the faff at1.3 bar. i have just done a rebuild on a mates faff, once again ringlands, and once again not much over 1bar. the ring lands are rubbish on these cars. you want power, change the pistons, bottom line!

Boost pressure is only a fraction of the cause of ringland failure. You have to consider cooling, plug types, lube type and cooling, timing and fuelling etc etc. There are plenty of people running those pressures flawlessly on daily drivers. I was running 0.95bar on an otherwise standard ATA 185 with interwarmer for nearly 2.5years without fault. The reason it was ok with that is the ECU overfuels like mad to keep it cool, if you remove the cooling effect of the extra fuel you will of course start damaging pistons - tuning is about the careful increase of power through various techniques while maintaining reliability through ensuring engine temp parameters are monitored and controlled.

You cant just blame the pistons because they fail - thats like blaming the car brakes when you hit a tree doing 50 in ice.

that fair play mate but av rebuilt loads of engines on various cars, never had a piston fail from ring lands, ive done 5 celicas ands 4 were ringlands. i realise its a tuning issue, never had them fail on a standard car! but who wants a standard car? almost everyone has turned the boost up on these cars, and 2 get anything like a decent amount of power out of a 165/85 you need to go above 1bar! and the ring lands will eventually die over 1bar. IMO of course

It's also worth bearing in mind the age of the motor, 15-20 years of use and any part is possibly going to suffer, stock tubby, brakes whatever. You can replace 99% of parts but you will still be relying on the weakest/oldest link in the chain, based on personal experience.

again mate your rite, but all cars have weak points if you want, on some, its the crank, others its the cams, but on gt4z, it seems to be more often than not, ring lands, in my experance of couse ;D someone asked what mods i would do, and i will definatly be replacing the stock pistons b4 i put the engine back in carlos. now, can we get back to the job in hand and sell my turbo please? ;D

Up the boost without supporting mods and of course you'll run into problems! The problem with everyone black-marking cars as "weak X" is it gets a rep based on that, which isnt true if you take the time to do it properly - the problem is that these days the people who buy GT4's are the type that can rarely afford to do the supporting mods properly. There is always a weak link of course, no reason to call that link crap though.

Get selling your turbo :) You've had multiple boosts back to the top for free so shut up  ;D

I`m sure I posted that question in the 185 bits for sale thread, don`t know how it ended up here?

This post will probably end up in that thread.

Free bump., lol

Got to agree Coyote, I replaced my coolant hoses by elimination, as each one split I replaced it, lol. Not quite the same as chucking on a huge tubby, for example, and hoping it's gonna be better before considering the consequences on the rest of the system?

Cheers
