Price of rebuild.
« on: February 24, 2008, 02:17:23 pm »
I didn't know where to post this one, so.......................

I am pricing parts to rebuild Pauls ATA engine, local pricing has been a bit sporadic ranging from £6k to £9k from those who bothered to give me a price at all.
So thinking that I was buying bits made from unobtainium, I went on the hunt for parts, which inevitably led to our American cousins.
A place in California called top end performance gave me this.

JE Forged pistons.. .to my compression ratio and overbore size, treated to cope with N2O.
Total-Seal Gapless Rings.
Clevite77 Rod and Main Bearings and Thrust Washers.
Cometic metal head gasket.
Full Engine Gasket Set with Steel Shim Head Gasket.
ARP Head Studs,
ARP Rod Bolts,
(16 ) Stainless Steel Valves, treated to cope with N2O
Timing Belt,
Tensioner bearing,
Idler bearing,
Water pump,
ARP Flywheel bolts
and Pauter OR Carillo Forged Connecting Rod Set.
For the princely sum of $2760 shipping included.
Thats £1403.52 in Queens head pounds or €1860.65 in proper money.
So with a mechanic mate quoting approx 40 hours to do the rebuild, the question is, WTF?

Why are the other guys so damned expensive?

Ok, so in your Queens head pounds then 40hours at £40 is £1600 plus parts £1403.52 is £3003.52 still along bit away from what I have been quoted.
Am I missing something here?
