Title: Routine checking
Post by: Bazross on August 12, 2017, 05:53:27 pm
Well I heard a strange swishing on the 205 this week and traced it to the cam belt so this afternoon I took off the belt cover....
The belt seemed very slack across the cam pulleys so I took the plunge and stripped it down
I'm glad I did the bottom idler pulley above the oil pump Is shot and is moving about 3-5 mm  deffo shot at
Not sure how long this would have run like this but I'm breathing a big sigh of relief as it's just a belt kit and not a full top end rebuild I need.
Any strange sounds from the car boys don't ignore them check them out it may save you in the long run
Regards Baz

Is that a straightforward job then? Just pull the pulley of and replace it and the belt?
Hope it goes well.

No it's a job for very small people with very tiny hands
Gotta remove the bottom crank pulley and the drivers side engine mount which is tight for space
Other than that it's pretty easy
I'm very anal about timing belts though and usually take longer than needed to turn the engine by hand several times then check the marks then turn it several times and check the marks and turn it by hand check the marks  and if they still are ok I'll assemble the rest back together
It's just me and belts I once seen a guy throw a belt on a Lexus start it and smash almost every valve ????????

I've just learned that the 3sgte engine is a non interference engine so if the belt breaks it does not smash the valves.... And for years I thought it was an interference engine.... everyday is a school day and you never stop learning saying that it being a non interference engine makes me happy
